Fever Hits DepEd
Tonio Ocampo (09.01.2006)
On August 23, 2006, Professors Reyes (Principal), Calingasan (Assistant Principal for Academic Programs), and Ocampo (ORDP Head) went to Lingayen, Pangasinan to hold a one-day seminar-workshop on curriculum integration at the invitation of DepEd Pangasinan District I. In attendance were the faculty and administrators of the three integrated schools in the district.
DepEd has long been setting up Integrated Schools throughout the country. Aside from economic benefits (less administrators to pay), these schools are a part of DepEd's solution to keep students in schools by providing secondary education in areas with only primary education units. Although the Department as a whole has never sought UPIS' assistance in this endeavor, only DepEd Pangasinan District I has.
The UPIS team noticed a recurring hindrance to vertical integration with the DepEd-run Integrated Schools in attendance. This is the continuing division between the elementary and the high school. These schools still maintain assistant principals for the two levels. UPIS had long solved this problem by making subject-based departments include teachers from both levels.
